Start by preheating the grill for about 10 minutes. Heat helps loosen grease and surface residue. Brushing along the direction of the grate bars helps remove loose rust particles effectively.


For heavier rust buildup, remove the grates from the grill and soak them in warm water mixed with mild detergent. After soaking for around 20–30 minutes, scrub the surface again with a wire brush or non-metal scrubbing pad. This process helps break down rust and grease layers that accumulate over time.


Another common cleaning method involves using baking soda paste. Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to create a thick paste, apply it to rusty areas, and leave it for about 15 minutes. The mild abrasive properties of baking soda help loosen rust without damaging the metal surface.


After cleaning, rinse the grates thoroughly and dry them completely to prevent new rust formation. Lightly coat the cooking grates with cooking oil before the next use. Heating the grill afterward allows the oil to form a protective layer on the metal surface.
